Geographical & Historical Outline of Koufonisia<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Koufonisia is a cluster of two islands, Kato (Lower) and Pano (Upper) Koufonisi that belongs to the complex of Small East Cyclades.
\nGeographically, it is located on the southeast side of Naxos and on the west side of Amorgos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Upper Koufonisi is the smallest with an area of 3,5 square kilometers and Lower Koufonisi has an area of 4,3 square kilometers but it is almost uninhabited.
\nThere are only a few rural houses on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koufonisia were inhabited since ancient times.<\/span>
\nExcavations in Epano Mili brought into light important findings from the first years of Cycladic Civilization.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the course of history, Koufonisia followed the fate of the rest of Cyclades islands.
\nThey were dominated by the Venetians and the Turks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koufonisia set free along with the rest Cyclades islands and incorporated with the rest Greece in 1830.<\/span><\/p>\n

HOW TO GET THERE<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Koufonisia are connected with the port of Piraeus and Naxos all year around by ferry boat or high speed boat.
\nDistance 120 nautical miles from Piraeus and 24 nautical miles from Naxos.
\nThe trip from Piraeus lasts about 8,30 hours.<\/span>
\nThere is also a regular connection with Naxos.<\/span><\/p>\n

TRANSPORT ON THE ISLAND<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are no turnpikes in the island, so cars and motorcycles are not necessary.
\nFurthermore, distances on Koufonisia can be covered on foot, by small boats that make frequent runs to the beaches and by bicycles that are rent here.<\/span><\/p>\n
