{"id":541,"date":"2009-03-16T10:52:30","date_gmt":"2009-03-16T10:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/?p=541"},"modified":"2021-12-01T09:44:27","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T07:44:27","slug":"spetses-geographical-historical-outline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/spetses-geographical-historical-outline\/","title":{"rendered":"Spetses Geographical &#038; Historical Outline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Spetses Geographical &amp; Historical Outline<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Spetses is the southernmost island in the group of Saronic Gulf.<br \/>\nIt is separated by a narrow stretch of water, about 2 nautical miles wide, from the coast of the Argolida, the nearest settlement being Kosta in Ermionida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Spetses Island has an area of 22 square kilometers and 25 kilometers of coastline.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The larger part of the island is covered by dense pine woods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Spetses Geographical &amp; Historical Outline<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">HISTORY<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Spetses was called Pityousa in ancient times.<br \/>\nAccording to the archaeological finds yielded by excavations in the region of Agia Marina, the island was inhabited from the Bronze Age on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In the 9th c. AD it was abandoned because of repeated Arab raids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It was later reoccupied and under the Turkish domination Spetses received special privileges from the conquerors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The naval power it acquired enabled it to a play a leading role, with the neighboring island Hydra, in the struggle against the Turks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Laskarina Bouboulina, one of the most heroic female figures in the Greek War of Independence of 1821, was born on Spetses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
