Informations about Arki<\/span><\/p>\n

Arki is a small paradise, an ideal refuge, the right place for those wanting quiet and peaceful holidays.<\/span>
\nIt is the largest of a group of small and rocky islands north of Lipsi.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arki is connected by boat with Patmos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arki Island History<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In ancient times Arki island was called Akritis.<\/span>
\nAs in other greek islands the first inhabitants of Arki were Kares followed by the Dorians and the Ionian Greeks from Militos.<\/span>
\nThey built a small fortress on Arki in the early Hellenistic years. It was called the Castle of Augustine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ancient fortifications were used again in the early Byzantine period after having been reinforced appropriately.<\/p>\n

From the highest point of the castle must have been direct visual contact with Kasteli, the Acropolis of Patmos.<\/p>\n

When, in 1087, Saint Christodoulos became owner of Patmos, the island of Arki was used by the Monastery as farming land and pasturing ground.
\nTwo bronze coins were found on the island, one of which is of the roman type of concord.<\/span><\/p>\n

At Tiganakia beach has been found prehistoric pottery from the Neolithic period. In Koutsoura area, fishermen report that there are buildings in the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

The only settlement on the island is built along the port and has less than 100 residents.<\/span>
\nOn Arki you will find some rooms to let and taverns where you will taste fresh fish and delicious local recipes.<\/span><\/p>\n

You will swim in the beautiful beaches of the island (the largest one is Tiganakia with fine sand, pebbles and crystal waters) or you will take a boat and tour around it. You can anchor in the isolated islands of unique beauty like Marathi with an exotic sandy beach of unique beauty.
\nIn this island there are a few rooms to let and a fish taverns.<\/span><\/p>\n

The island is surrounded by small islets that constitute the Arki island complex (Marathi, Smineronisi, Tsouka, Tsoukaki, Avaptistos, Makronisi, Psathonisi, Kalovolos and Nisaki).<\/span><\/p>\n

TRADITION \u2013 EVENTS<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On 23 August is held a feast for Virgin Mary with traditional folk music and local dishes.<\/span><\/p>\n
