{"id":9,"date":"2009-03-01T18:47:06","date_gmt":"2009-03-01T18:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/?p=9"},"modified":"2020-12-12T13:24:29","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T11:24:29","slug":"tour-of-aegina-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/tour-of-aegina-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour of Aegina island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Tour of Aegina island<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Aegina is a beautiful island with graphic settlements, long sandy and well \u2013 organized beaches, historical monuments, important archaeological sights and churches.<br \/>\nIt is located about 18 nautical miles from Attica and it attracts many visitors all year round.<br \/>\nAegina, known as the \u201cisland of pistachio\u201d, is the second biggest island in Argosaronikos Gulf after Salamina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The island has an excellent tourist infrastructure, with an abundance of hotels, apartments and rooms to let, restaurants, bars, shops, travel and car rental agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Aegina Town<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The capital of the island, also called AEGINA, is a small town with a few neoclassical houses that recall its earlier gentility.<br \/>\nAmongst its churches are the pretty church of Agios Nikolaos in the harbor and the Cathedral of Agios Dionysios, built during the period of Turkish domination, at which the first government of liberated Greece was sworn in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Aegina-Afea.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7792 size-medium\" title=\"Tour of Aegina island\" src=\"https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Aegina-Afea-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"Tour of Aegina island\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Aegina-Afea-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Aegina-Afea-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Aegina-Afea-660x393.jpg 660w, https:\/\/greek-islands-portal.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Aegina-Afea.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Archaeological Museum (Tel. + 30 22970 22637) houses architectural members from the temple of Afaia, a marble Sphinx, a statue of Hercules \u2013from the temple of Apollo- and other objects of some interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In Aegina town can also be seen Kapodistria\u2019s Government House, now home to an important library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Just to the north of the port, at Kolona is a single Doric column that belongs to the temple of Apollo (6th c. BC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In the capital there are numerous hotels, pensions, rooms to let of all categories, restaurants, fish taverns, and coffee shops.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In the enchanting atmosphere of the night you can have fun and dance at the bars and clubs of the town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Near the village of KYPSELI, 3 km. north \u2013 west of Aegina, is the church of the Agii Theodori.<br \/>\nIt was built on 1282 and has some fine wall \u2013 paintings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Tour of Aegina island<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A road leading northwards from Aegina runs along the north coast of the island to PLAKAKIA, LEONTI, SOUVALA and VAYA.<br \/>\nAll of them sea side resorts with hotels, rooms for rent, restaurants, taverns, bars, etc. \u2013 and ends at TOURLOS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Another road runs east from Aegina town, to Paleochora (6 km.from Aegina).<br \/>\nThis is an abandoned town built in a hill with a medieval castle on the summit that was the capital of the island from the 9th to the 19th c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Only a few of the notable churches in the town survive.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The nunnery of Agios Nektarios is worth visiting; the saint lived and died (in 1920) here, and his tomb and relic are kept in the nunnery, which celebrates its festival on 9 November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">MESAGROS a medieval village, 9 km. north-east of the town has a strong tradition of pottery-making and enjoys a superb view of the temple of Afaia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Temple of Afaia<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Doric temple of Afaia is built on a hill 4 km. from Agia Marina.<br \/>\nIt was thought to be one of the most important temples in antiquity and included a perirteral temple of the goddess with pedimental sculptural decoration of Parian marble.<br \/>\nThis decoration was removed by Ludwig of Bavaria and is now kept in the Munich Glyptothek.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On the total of 34 columns in the peristyle, 24 are preserved, along with part of the restored entablature and two columns of the pronaos.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px;\">Agia Marina\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The road continues south to AGIA MARINA (13 km. east of Aegina).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This is a sea-side holiday resort set amongst pines, with a fine and fully organized sandy beach and good bathing.<br \/>\nIn Agia Marina you will find hotels, apartments and rooms to let of all categories, graphic taverns on the beach, coffee shops, bars and clubs.<br \/>\nThe little church of Agia Marina celebrates on 17th July, when crowds of people gather from the neighboring villages to enjoy the local festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Tour of Aegina island<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Marathonas &#8211; Perdika<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The road to the south of Aegina town leads to Faros, Paliopyrgos, Marathonas, Aeginitissa, and Profitis Elias, ending at Perdika, a beautiful fishing village in the gulf of Marathonas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Perdika is an old traditional settlement, build around the port.<br \/>\nMain characteristic of the settlement of Perdika is the small houses with their yards to connect with each other.<br \/>\nVery close to Perdika are the picturesque beaches of Klima and Sarpa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Marathonas is another tourist resort with a nice organized sandy beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Aeginitissa is 2 kilometers from Perdika and disposes a fully organized beach with snack bars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The entire west coast of the island has some fine, clear beaches, both sandy and pebbles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Opposite Perdika is the verdant uninhabited islet of Moni (3 nautical miles away), full of pine trees.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There are frequent connections by small boat in the summer.<br \/>\nIts sandy beaches have deep, clear waters, suitable for underwater fishing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The road continues to Sfentouri, to the east of Perdika, a popular tourist place with interesting traditional elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The ruins of Zeus Hellanios stand on a hill 530 m. high in the interior of the island, near Pachia Rachi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">NEARBY ISLANDS<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The island of Agistri, 4 nautical miles west of Aegina, is connected by ferry boat with Aegina and Piraeus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">LOCAL PRODUCTS<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
