Informations about Astypalea<\/span><\/p>\n

Astypalea lies to the west of Nisyros and to the east of Anafi.<\/span>
\nIt has an area of 97 square kilometers and 110 kilometers of coastline.<\/span>
\nIt has a rocky terrain and scant vegetation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sea cults deeply into the island, so that it resembles connected by a narrow strip of land 105 meters wide.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ancient Greeks called the island Ichthyoessa, Pyrra and Pylea and it was the first inhabited by Karians and Minoans of Crete.<\/span>
\nIt prospered greatly during the Classical and Roman period. <\/span><\/p>\n

During Byzantine times it was part of the theme of the Aegean.
\nIt was there after occupied by the Venetians, the Turks and finally the Italians.<\/span><\/p>\n

TRANSPORTATION IN ASTYPALEA<\/span><\/p>\n

By airplane from Athens or Rhodes or by ferry boat from Piraeus port.
\nDistance 117 nautical miles (12 hours).<\/span><\/p>\n

The island is also connected with several of the islands of Cyclades and Dodecanese.<\/span><\/p>\n
