Lemnos is a beautiful island of the north Aegean, ideal for quiet, peaceful holidays and relaxing.
It is an impressive volcanic island with golden sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, traditional settlements, hospitable inhabitants and archaeological sights.

Lemnos attracts many visitors every year and the tourist infrastructure is very good: there are numerous hotels and rooms to let of all categories, restaurants, taverns, cafes, bars and clubs for amusement up to the morning.

MYRINA

MYRINA, the capital and the main port of the island which is also called Kastro, is built on the site of the ancient city of this name, on two bays: the harbor and Romeikos Gialos.
Myrina has numerous shops, hotels and rooms to let of all categories, restaurants, taverns and bars.

On the hill above the picturesque town, with its narrow paved streets and stone mansions, stands the Byzantine castle.
It was built by Andronikos I Komninos on the ruins of Pelasgian walls, and later strengthened by the Genoese and the Venetians.

Sights worth visiting in the town include:

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM with finds from Myrina, Hephaesteia.

THE KABEIRION, THE PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENTS OF POLIOCHNI AND IMVROS.

THE CATHEDRAL OF HOLY TRINITY in Myrina has two carved stone campaniles.

The cultural association, in co-operation with the Municipality, organizes events including performances of plays by a local amateur group, dance troupes, etc.

PLATY

The settlement of PLATY, 2 kilometers outside the town, has several traditional houses and some fine old fountains.

At THERMA, 4 kilometers from Myrina, there are mineral springs.

AGIOS IOANNIS & KASPAKAS

North of the town lies AGIOS IOANNIS and KASPAKAS, a traditional village built on the slopes of a hill out of the sight of the sea, for fear of pirates.

To the east of Kaspakas, is KORNOS, one of the most beautiful of the inland villages of Lemnos, where excellent local sweets are made.

Further east is AGIOS DIMITRIOS, which produces excellent muscatel wine.

ATSIKI

The village of ATSIKI, next to the airport, 22 kilometers north-east of Myrina, lies amidst a host of vines and fruit trees and enjoys a superb view over the bay of Pournias.
It also has many local customs and festivals.

To the east is REPANIDI, a traditional inland village (25 kilometers north-east of Myrina), which has some interesting churches with carved and Byzantine icons and the remains of a Byzantine castle at Kotsinas, deep in the bay of Pournias.

KONTOPOULI

In this same area, to the north-east of the capital, is the head-village of KONTOPOULI, which has a distinctive local atmosphere, built next to two small lakes.

North of this village, on the right side of the bay of Pournias, are the remains of ancient Hephaesteia, the most important city on Lemnos in the Classical period.
Part of a Greco-Roman theater survives, as well as house-foundations, the ruins of the acropolis and a cemetery.

The Kabeirion, 3 kilometers to the north, is earlier than the Kabeirion on Samothrace.

MOUDROS

MOUDROS , 27 kilometers from Myrina and the second most important harbor on Lemnos is a beautiful little town with fine houses.
In the region you will find hotels and rooms to let, taverns and cafes.

A short distance to the north-east is POLIOCHNI, the earliest Neolithic site in the Aegean.
Four settlements have been discovered here, built one above the other.

Other beautiful villages are PANAGIA and PLAKA at the north-east end of the island, with fine honey and cheese, and SKANDALI, a picturesque little village to the north-east, with the monastery of Agios Sozon nearby.

BEACHES

In Myrina, you can swim at the fine beach of the town or at the nearby beaches of Romeikos Gialos and Richa Nera.
Both of these Lemnos beaches are well-organized.

Richa Nera beach is ideal for families.

Avlonas Beach is a pristine stretch of sand with transparent water.

The popular Platys Beach is a long sandy beach with powdery sand, water sports facilities, bars and taverns.
The village of Platy is developed in a very known tourist region.

Thanos beach is one of the most attractive Lemnian beaches.
It is surrounded by volcanic rocks and has turquoise waters.
You will find rented rooms and taverns.

Another popular beach is located several kilometres north of Myrina and is called Agios Ioannis Beach.
It is surrounded by huge volcanic rocks and has fine sand and clear waters.

Makrys Gialos is a quiet sandy beach located 36 kilometers from the capital and 7 kilometers from Moudros.
It has crystal clear waters and it is ideal for water sports.

Agios Ermolaos is a quiet beach well known for the breathtaking landscape that surrounds it.

LOCAL PRODUCTS

The local products of Lemnos have been famed since antiquity.
Cheese products are still made using traditional manners.
The most known are feta and salamoura cheeses.

The famous of the island’s wines has spread around the world and the local ouzo is very good.
The island produces honey of fine quality.

In the traditional taverns and restaurants of Lemnos you can taste the delicious local cuisine. Lemnos is also famous for its pottery.

TRADITION – EVENTS

Lemnos celebrates various feasts every year.

The most famous are:

The Feast of Agios Ioannis on 22 June which is celebrated at Kaspakas village.

One of the most famous religious feasts is that of the Saviour which is celebrated on 6th August at Nea Koutali village.

On the 15th August the Feast of the Virgin Mary is celebrated in the entire island.

At the village of Panagia the feast lasts two days.
