Geographical & Historical Outline of Lipsi

This is a small group of islets at the northern part of the Dodecanese of which Lipsi is the largest and the only inhabited.
It lies between Patmos and Leros and has an area of 16 square kilometers.

Around the main island, 24 islets and 6 rocky peaks make up an impressive island group.

Its history is shared with that of the rest of the Dodecanese islands.

Lipsi seems to have been inhabited from pre-historic times until today.
The first inhabitants of the island were Kares, Dorians and Ionians.

For five hundred years, beginning in the reign of the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komninos, the small island was under the absolute control of the monastery on Patmos.

During the Greek War of Independence of 1821, its isolated position made it a suitable refuge for the insurgents and it became an outpost for Greek ships in their clashes with the Turkish fleet.
