Geographical & Historical Outline

Folegandros lies between Milos and Sikinos islands.
It is a small, rocky, barren and arid island, with a steep coastline, rudimentary tourist infrastructure and only one road, linking Ano Meria with Karavostasi – the port – and passing through Chora, the capital.

The island was known in ancient times as Polykandros and Sidera.
It is believed to have been inhabited from about 3000 BC by Karians and Phoenicians.

According to mythology, the name Folegandros derives from Folegandros, son of king Minos of Crete, who lived here.
This demonstrates that were ties between Minoan Crete and Folegandros.

During the Frankish period it belonged to the Duchy of Naxos and was fortified with a strong castle by the Venetians.
