Thassos Geographical & Historical Outline
Thassos lies to the south-east of the town of Kavala, opposite the bay of Keramoti.
It has an area of 379 square kilometers and 96 kilometers of coastline.
It is famous for its greenery and superb beaches, most of them with fine sand.

The island was inhabited by the Thracians in the Neolithic period and was called Edonis.
Its geographical position, rich mineral ores, fertile soil and powerful fleet made Thassos an important power, which founded colonies.
It was conquered by the Persians, the Athenians, the Spartans, the Macedonians, and finally, the Romans.
During the Roman period it enjoyed certain privileges, and flourished under the emperor Adrian.
In 1459, it was captured by the Turks, along with Samothrace.
The island was liberated in 1912.
