Mykonos Town

The white-clad town of CHORA or MYKONOS, stretches in the shape of a broad horseshoe over a plain around the harbor.
To the north rises the small hill with the castle, with the hill of Kato Myli to the south.
The earliest settlement on the island evolved inside the castle, within which it remained confined until the 17th c. while the later neighborhoods of Chora were created outside the walls.

The traditional Cycladic settlement of Mykonos has retained its uniformity thanks to the use of white as a common color and the construction of houses of the same height, most of them two-storey buildings with tiny balconies and colored windows.

Numerous little churches and chapels, hidden minuscule piazzas and water wells, as well as the multitude of colorful shops are there to further accent this chaotic picturesque setting, where a simple stroll can turn into the most exhilarating experience.

In Kastro, the earliest neighborhood of Mykonos, are to be found some of the most important churches: Agia Eleni, Agia Moni, the Panagia Pyrgiani, Agios Dimitrios and the Panagia Paraportiani, which is the most interesting from an architectural point of view and also the most distinctive.
The Paraportiani, and the windmills are the island’s trademark.

Next to the church of the Paraportiani, is a picturesque neighborhood known as the “Little Venice” or Alefkandra.
It starts from the beach of Alefkantra and stretches to the old neighborhood of Castle.
The sea leaks the walls of the houses and the waves rise up on the wooden balconies. It is the most idyllic spot of the town, especially in the late afternoon, where one can enjoy a wonderful sunset.
Little Venice is the artist’s favorite neighborhood.
