GAIOS, on the south-east coast, is the capital of the island, built around the port. It lies in a verdant setting at the head of a sheltered bay, with two small islands: Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, at its entrance.
It is worth seeing the church of Agii Apostoli in the town, which has some important wall-paintings.
The Museum of Paxi is also found here.
On Agios Nikolaos are preserved the remains of a Venetian fortress dating from 1423, and on Panagia there a monastery of this name, which celebrates its festival on 15 August.
The houses of the capital are still keeping the traditional septinsular architecture.
While along the coastal road there are mansions of neoclassical style, painted in soft, bright colors (pink of blue).
On Gaios there are numerous hotels, apartments and rooms to let of all categories, restaurants of Greek and international cuisine, taverns, coffee shops, grill rooms, bars, night clubs and many shops.
